Artist statement: May 2009

My work and subject matter is diverse and always changing. Within each new body of work I experiment with new techniques to further the progression of my paintings. In my most recent work, I began by stretching my own canvases and preparing my own grounds. In so doing, the painting develops its own character before paint even touches the surface.

My painting moves between opposite poles of realism and an abstract constructed of drawing and a loose application of paint. I especially love watching the paint move across the canvas, letting the paint drips take on a life of their own and letting the paint itself take control.

My artistic influences include contemporary artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, Peter Doig, Joan Mitchell Milton Avery, Fairfield Porter and my current teacher, painter, Kathy Moss.
